Eastern Market After Oktoberfest: The Bigger Story Is What Endures

October 1, 2026

Autumn at Eastern Market brings Michigan pumpkins, apples and squash, alongside mums and fall bouquets. St. Joseph’s Oktoberfest took place September 25–27, 2026, with live entertainment, kids’ games, a raffle and church tours. See the Eastern Market event listing for the original event details.

None of that is unusual for fall at Eastern Market. What's easy to miss, standing in Shed 5 with a cup of coffee from Anthology Coffee, is that this familiar fall routine is happening under a name that wasn't running the place three years ago, and that the reason it feels ordinary at all is a story worth knowing before you start weaving through vendor stalls.

The Leadership Change Behind the Familiar Routine

Dan Carmody spent 17 years as CEO of Eastern Market Partnership, arriving in 2007 when the district was, by his own description in a Detroit News interview, still finding its footing. He retired on December 31, 2024. Katy Trudeau, who had been the market's president since 2023, took over as CEO on January 1, 2025. This fall is her second full autumn in charge, not her first, and if you didn't read a press release in late 2024 there's a good chance you never clocked the change at all.

The handover had already been tested, in the hardest possible way, more than a year before it was made official.

The Transition Nobody Announced

In August 2023, Carmody and his wife Vivian were struck by a car while walking to dinner in Detroit. Vivian died. Dan Carmody was injured. Trudeau, who had only recently become market president, stepped in to run day-to-day operations while Carmody recovered, a period the Detroit News later described as the moment the organization's succession plan was quietly put to its real test.

By the time Eastern Market Partnership made Trudeau's promotion to CEO official at the end of 2024, she had already been steering the market's Saturday rhythm, its shed schedule and its vendor relationships for over a year. "For years, Dan has guided Eastern Market with a deep respect for its legacy and impact on Detroit," Trudeau said in the announcement, a line that reads less like a new hire's introduction and more like someone closing out a job she'd already been doing.

That's the part of the story a first-time visitor's guide to Eastern Market will never mention, because it isn't in the market's marketing copy. It's in the difference between what changed on paper and what changed on the ground, which for regulars was close to nothing.

What to Find in the Sheds This Fall

If you want the concrete, walk-around version of fall at the market, it's this. DeVries & Co. 1887 has its usual run of scarecrows, skeletons and Halloween yard decorations out front. Canton Floral is selling fall-themed bouquets built around mini scarecrows. Cyberoptix, the menswear stall known for ties and bow ties, has its autumnal designs on display, including a Halloween-leaning line. If you shop with a dog or a cat, 3 Dogs 1 Cat runs Saturday adoption events and stocks Halloween costumes sized for pets, which is a more specific reason to bring the leash than most fall guides bother to mention.

The produce itself follows a shed-by-shed logic that repeats every year but rewards knowing it. Sheds 2 through 5 are where the growers set up directly, and by late September that means tomatoes are thinning out while squash, apples and pie pumpkins take over the tables. Shed 6, at the market's northern end, stays dedicated to flowers and plants, so the fall arrangements and garden décor cluster there rather than mixed in with the food stalls.

On October 24, 2026, the sheds also host the Michigan Brewers Guild’s annual Detroit Fall Beer Festival, a separate event from Oktoberfest but part of the same crowded autumn calendar that makes this stretch of the year one of the market's busiest outside of Flower Day in spring.

The Building That Almost Wasn't Standing for Any of This

Three blocks from Shed 5, at the corner of Russell and Winder, sits the Del Bene Building, built in 1908 and named for the produce company that operated there from the mid-1990s until 2007. On September 16, 2023, its upper facade partially collapsed onto the sidewalk during a busy market Saturday, injuring one person and forcing out the tenants inside, including Jab's Gym, Beyond Juicery & Eatery, Brooklyn Outdoor and a Detroit Vs. Everybody storefront.

The city issued an emergency demolition order within hours. What happened next is the part that matters for anyone who cares how this district actually treats its history. Preservation Detroit and independent architects pushed back, arguing the failure was limited to a non-load-bearing facade and that the building's frame was sound. The owner, Scot Turnbull, appealed the order and submitted an engineer's assessment. By late October 2023, the city's Buildings, Safety Engineering and Environmental Department agreed to let him stabilize and repair the structure instead of tearing it down, a reversal Metro Times reported as a win for the preservationists who had urged the city to reconsider.

The Del Bene Building is back in use today. It's a small, unglamorous example of the same pattern that shows up in the market's leadership story: something breaks, hard, in public, and the response is to stabilize and continue rather than clear the lot and start over.

The Blocks Around the Sheds

None of this changes what a Saturday actually looks like once you're done shopping. The market's edges still run on the same short list of stops regulars pass along to newcomers. Eastern Market Brewing Co. for something local on tap. Vivio's Food and Spirits if you want their bloody mary with your late breakfast. Detroit City Distillery for a tasting room pour to close out the morning. Anthology Coffee, just past the shark mural on Division Street, for the patio seat and the good coffee before any of that.

For a fall visit, keep the regular market and past event dates distinct:

  • Saturday Market runs 6 a.m. to 4 p.m., year-round, and the earlier you arrive the better the produce selection.
  • Oktoberfest took place Friday, September 25 through Sunday, September 27, 2026, with music, kids’ activities, a raffle and church tours. It is a past event.
  • Fall produce is concentrated in Sheds 2 through 5, while flowers, plants and garden décor stay in Shed 6.
  • Pet owners can stop by 3 Dogs 1 Cat for Saturday adoption events and seasonal costumes.

None of that requires knowing who's running the nonprofit behind it or what happened to a produce building three years ago. But it's worth knowing anyway, because the reason this fall feels this unremarkable is that the people and the buildings that make Eastern Market work already got tested, hard, and held.

If you're thinking about what it actually means to live near a district like this, close enough to walk to Saturday market instead of driving in for it, that's a conversation Christopher Hubel is always glad to have.
