The block of Woodward that used to be a scoop-and-go ice cream stop is turning into the busiest new address in Ferndale. The block of Nine Mile that used to be an after-dinner walk is turning into a coffee-and-wine corridor. If you have lived here more than a year, you have felt this without naming it. Late summer 2026 is when the shift stops being subtle.
This is a resident's read of what actually changed on the two streets you already walk, plus a practical way to think about Dream Cruise weekend on August 14 without giving up your own neighborhood.
The Thesis, In One Sentence
Ferndale's food and drink center of gravity is drifting north on Woodward toward the old Treat Dreams block, and Nine Mile is quietly re-forming as a slower, cafe-and-wine spine that runs parallel to it. The two streets used to compete for the same evening. In 2026 they trade shifts.
The Woodward Move
The most useful way to picture what happened this spring is a short list of doors that did not exist a year ago.

Three doorways inside four blocks. That is a density change, not a coincidence.
The Pavilion is the keystone. Set to open in 2026, it marks the city's first venture into the food hall concept, and the Woodward Avenue location keeps its sweet spot while adding five fresh vendors. Treat Dreams itself stays put inside the building, so you are not losing an ice cream stop, you are gaining five reasons to stand around it. The vendor lineup is the tell about who this is aimed at. TV chef Josie Clemens, the Detroit native known from Hell's Kitchen and Food Network appearances, plans unique fusion dishes and soul food burritos, while fellow Hell's Kitchen contestant Jared Bobkin will craft Asian-inspired fare specializing in handmade dumplings. Cosmic Roots mixes alcohol-free kava drinks, plant-based concoctions, and craft coffee, and St. Clair Shores food truck sensation Papelon sets up serving Venezuelan arepas.
Two blocks south, The Corner Shop reads as the more grown-up bookend. From the folks behind Rail & Anchor gift store in downtown Royal Oak, Corner Shop is a tiny coffee shop with an adjacent bar, wine shop and bookstore all at one address, with coffee, tea and espresso on the cafe side and a full bar featuring cocktails, wine and beer on the bar side, small snacks after 3 p.m., and a curated selection of bottled wines shelved for drinking in the bar or taken to go. The cafe is open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, with the books and wine side running 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. That 7 a.m. open is the number that matters. Woodward has had bars and Woodward has had coffee, but a place that hands you an espresso at seven and a Rioja at nine, in the same room, is new stock.
Rovi Grill is the third piece. A new casual spot for Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine, it does counter service, online ordering and delivery with a dining room, and its menu features classics like deboned chicken dinners, shawarma sandwiches, hummus, falafel, and tabbouleh and fattoush salads, with a specialty in layered bowls. Fast, cheap, weekday. It fills the slot between "I don't want to cook" and "I don't want to sit down."
Read those three together and the pattern is not a new restaurant scene. It is a new rhythm: morning coffee, weekday lunch bowl, evening food hall, late glass of wine, all inside a walkable stretch of Woodward that used to empty out after the ice cream line broke up.
Nine Mile Is Turning Slower, On Purpose
Look east of Woodward and the change is quieter. Balam Coffee & Wine opened at 207 E. Nine Mile Road on March 16, 2026, a new cafe and wine bar in downtown Ferndale. From the sibling restaurateurs behind Mezcal, Balam is the Mayan word for jaguar, and the concept features wines sourced from Latin American countries like Argentina, Chile, and Mexico, along with Mexican coffee, fresh juices, and Mexican pastries and wraps, seating about 30 guests with a hidden speakeasy on the property.
Thirty seats and a speakeasy is not a volume play. It is a deliberate counterweight to Woodward's density.
Then the next Nine Mile move, which arrives before winter. Bad Brad's BBQ plans to open a new restaurant later this year at 345 E. Nine Mile Road in Ferndale, the former home of Otus Supply. That address matters. Otus Supply anchored the east end of Nine Mile as a live music room. Whatever your feelings about the swap from stage to smoker, the practical effect is that a large, high-capacity door at the far end of Nine Mile is coming back on line under a new operator this year.
If you draw those two openings on a map, Nine Mile in late 2026 has a small, wine-forward European cafe on one end and a full BBQ house on the other, with the existing spine of Howe's Bayou, Pop's For Italian, One-Eyed Betty's, The Magic Bag, and Go Comedy! in between. That is not a competing downtown to Woodward. That is a second, slower one.
The Dream Cruise Question
Now the weekend everyone is asking about. The Ferndale Dream Cruise, celebrating 31 years, happens Friday, August 14, 2026, from 12:00 PM onwards at Downtown Ferndale, Nine Mile and Woodward.
If you live within four blocks of that intersection, you already know the drill. If you moved here recently, three things to hold in mind:
- Cruise traffic reshapes Woodward into a spectator corridor for most of the day and into the evening. Anything with a Woodward address on the list above is a walk-up destination that weekend, not a park-and-go one.
- Nine Mile east of Woodward is your evening. Balam at 207 E. Nine Mile, One-Eyed Betty's at 175 W. Troy, and the Magic Bag block are all reachable from the neighborhoods east of Woodward on foot, without crossing the cruise route more than once.
- Harding Park is the daylight release valve. The city splash pad runs 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. daily all summer through Labor Day on Monday, September 7, 2026. Cruise Friday is exactly the day to remember it exists.
The move, if you want to be honest about it, is to treat Dream Cruise as a Woodward day and reclaim Nine Mile after dark. The new openings make that easier than it was last year.
What Is Still On The Calendar
A short list of the dates worth keeping between now and the end of September:
- August 14. Dream Cruise, 31st year, Nine Mile and Woodward.
- Through September 7. Harding Park splash pad, daily 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., closes Labor Day.
- September 25 to 27. The Funky Ferndale Art Fair, a free juried event featuring over 140 artists, takes over Nine Mile Road west of Woodward each September, blending art, music, food, and literature.
The art fair is the bookend on the summer thesis. It uses the west end of Nine Mile, which is exactly the stretch that Balam and the Woodward openings have quietly re-anchored. Walk it in late September and you will be walking a downtown that reorganized itself between March and August without a single ribbon cutting anyone will remember.
What This Means If You Own A House Here
For most readers this is a lifestyle read, not a market one. The one durable observation worth carrying home is this: streets that add a food hall and a 7 a.m. coffee-and-wine room in the same year are streets that keep foot traffic later into the evening and earlier in the morning. The homes that sit two and three blocks off Woodward and off the east half of Nine Mile are the ones that inherit the walkability without inheriting the noise.
