Michigan’s State Register recognition is connected to its historical marker program. State guidance includes stewardship requirements for exterior changes; a marker is not a substitute for checking a local ordinance. Some older inventory references may describe altered or lost places.

Local historic district

A local ordinance establishes a district and a commission to review covered work, usually exterior alterations, additions, and demolition. Some designations also include interior features. Confirm the exact parcel, ordinance, and approval process before planning work.

What does “contributing” mean?

A contributing property supports the significance and period documented for a district. A noncontributing property may still sit inside the district and be subject to local review. Check the nomination and local designation separately.

How do I research a home before buying or renovating?
  1. Find the parcel on the municipality’s official district map.
  2. Request the applicable ordinance, nomination, and any property-specific restrictions.
  3. Ask the local preservation staff which proposed work requires review.
  4. Compare old photographs and records with existing materials before deciding what to change.

Reviewed September 21, 2026. This collection includes all 143 federal district record entries for these five counties in the NPS May 22, 2026 inventory, plus 422 locally designated district and resource entries and 36 historical state references for districts and related places. Records for the same place are deliberately kept distinct. Northville is accessible from both counties.

Local schedules reproduced here include Ann Arbor; Birmingham; Canton Township; Clarkston; Detroit; Farmington Hills; Franklin; Huntington Woods; Lathrup Village; Linden; Livonia; Mount Clemens; New Baltimore; Northville; Oakland Township; Pontiac; Rochester Hills; Saline; Southfield; Utica; Warren; Ypsilanti. A local entry can be a neighborhood, a cemetery, a farm, a building, or another individually designated site—not necessarily a multi-property district. The local-authority directory also covers all 36 authorities identified by SHPO in these five counties. Some official schedules are linked rather than reproduced. Historical state references do not certify current state status or identical boundaries. Absence from the reproduced records does not mean a property lacks designation.

Lost places and historical records

Historic recognition is not proof that every documented building survives. Fenton’s former Downtown Historic District is recorded in the historical state inventory as demolished and federally delisted in 1975; it is kept outside the active-place directory. Other entries may describe changed landscapes. Confirm current conditions before a visit.

The federal records include additional documentation and boundary updates, so record counts are not counts of unique properties. “Recorded community” follows the source’s city field, which may name a township, vicinity, or nearby settlement rather than the property’s exact municipal jurisdiction.

History reaches beyond the register

A nationally listed district, a local historic district, and an important community story are different things. Michigan’s State Historic Preservation Office provides local historic district information and a community map. Check local study reports and ordinances for local boundaries. A place can hold significant history without appearing on either register.

This launch covers the complete Michigan portion of the dated federal inventory, not every locally designated district or every community with a meaningful past. Local museums, tribal resources, oral histories, and new district surveys will extend the directory. The five counties without entries in this inventory—Gladwin, Kalkaska, Montmorency, Ogemaw, and Oscoda—have local-history research leads here rather than empty pages.
