Two New Stories Today: Columbus and Broderick Tower

A Columbus Day bonus video at 3 PM, followed by Detroit's Broderick Tower comeback story at 6 PM.
Chris Hubel  |  October 12, 2026

Today is a double feature for History Loves Company. We are stepping outside Detroit for a Columbus Day bonus story at 3 PM, then coming back home at 6 PM for one of the most recognizable comeback stories in the Detroit skyline: Broderick Tower.

3 PM Bonus Video: Christopher Columbus

Because it is Columbus Day, we put together a bonus video that looks at Christopher Columbus from both sides: the myth, the ambition, the damage, the history we were taught, and the history that deserves a closer look.

This one is not a Detroit story, but it is exactly the kind of complicated history worth slowing down for. Some stories become holidays. Some become arguments. The truth usually lives somewhere deeper than the version most of us first learned.

6 PM Detroit Story: Broderick Tower

Then tonight at 6 PM, we are back in Detroit for the story of Broderick Tower, rising above Grand Circus Park with one of the best views in the city.

Broderick Tower began as a symbol of downtown ambition, spent years as one of Detroit's most visible vacant towers, and eventually came back to life as luxury apartments. It is one of those buildings that proves Detroit's best stories are rarely finished when people think they are.

In tonight's video, we look at the history of the building, the era that created it, the long vacancy, the restoration, and the way it now stands as part of downtown Detroit's modern comeback.

Why These Stories Matter

One story is a national myth we are still debating. The other is a Detroit landmark that survived long enough to be reimagined. Together, they are a reminder that history is not just about dates and names. It is about what we choose to remember, what we choose to question, and what we decide is worth saving.

Every home has a story. Let's discover yours.
