Milford, shaped by water and Main Street.

Follow the Huron River, the old mill ponds and the residential streets around Main Street. Milford’s history is visible in the way its downtown and homes still fit together.

The story of the place

A mill village that grew with the railroad.

Milford developed where Pettibone Creek meets the Huron River. Water powered the early mills, while the arrival of the railroad in 1871 opened new markets and encouraged another generation of stores, workshops and houses.

The North Milford Village Historic District entered the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. Its commercial blocks, residential streets, mill ponds and industrial sites record the community’s growth across the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Start at street level

Three places to begin.

Main Street

Look above the storefronts for the upper stories of Milford’s commercial buildings. The historic district includes three blocks of the central business area.

Pettibone Creek and the mill ponds

The water landscape helps explain why industry developed here. The district documentation identifies former mill sites and the ponds that supported them.

Liberty and Commerce streets

Nearby residential streets bring the story down to the scale of a house. The district survey records Greek Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne and Craftsman examples, among other styles.

Historic homes, with context

Look closely at the house and its setting.

Start with the exact address

Milford Village and Milford Township are different jurisdictions. Confirm the municipality, services and applicable requirements for each property before planning work.

Read the older materials

Ask an inspector experienced with older homes to evaluate foundations, drainage, roofs and mechanical systems. Original woodwork and windows deserve an informed repair plan.

Check the project before buying

If an addition, garage or exterior change is part of your plan, review the parcel and proposed work with the appropriate building and zoning office.
